AVENGER WRECK PHOTOS
The view from the front of the plane.  note the missing prop, engine cowling, and canopy.  Unfortunately these were all stolen by divers in years past.
In WW2 many US Navy aviators were trained in Lake Michigan off the carriers Sable and Wolverine.  Inevitably some of the aircraft wound up in Lake Michigan where most of them still rest today.  This Grumman TBM Avenger torpedo bomber crashed sometime in 1943.  It is a little north of the 68th street crib in 35 feet of water.
A closer view of the radial engine
The cockpit of the Avenger.  you can see the stub of the control stick and the rudder pedals.
The remains of the 30caliber machine gun turret behind the pilot compartment.
